So what is Baldness or Alopecia?
Baldness (alopecia)
By the age of 60 it is estimated
that 80% of all Caucasian males will experience some degree of baldness, also known as alopecia.
If one were to include the number
of women who also experience thinning and baldness, there would be over 70 million Americans alone, who would want a product to the calibre of
Viviscal and Viviscal Man.
The loss or absence of hair, is
usually only noticable on the scalp, but can occur at any hair bearing sites on the body.
Causes of Alopecia
There are different causes of
alopecia (hair loss). The main factors that have been linked to baldness
are:
-
Stress
-
Physical Trauma
-
Surgery
-
Extreme abnormal weight
loss
-
Heredity – which includes male baldness,
and is the most common form of alopecia.
-
Childbirth
-
Prolonged illness
-
Some drugs and anti-cancer therapies, which
can cause temporary alopecia.
Scientists have recently
discovered that the heredity factor of alopecia, which includes ‘male pattern baldness’, is the trait to over produce the male hormone
testosterone and double receptors.
Within the hair follicle,
testosterone combines with water and cholesterol to form dihydrotestosterone. This compound
affects the sebaceous gland’s secretion of sebum, a smooth, clean oil. The sebaceous glands are
attached to the hair follicles by a hollow tube of cells. These glands manufacture sebum that
reaches the skin surface via the hair follicle, where it provides a lubricating and protective film.
The dihydrotestosterone affects
the sebaceous gland in such a manner that the sebum oil is thick, sludgy and highly acidic rather than the thin smooth oil. The heavy oil forms a plug (sebum plug) which seals the hair follicle. This hormone then binds to the growth receptors in the hair cells and blocks the stimulation from normal
growth hormones.

Does Hair Die and I get Hair Loss?
When a person begins to experience
baldness or alopecia (hair loss), the first thought is the hair has died. Hair does not die that
easily. In fact, the science of electrolysis was developed just to kill the hair
bulbs.
When a person goes bald or they
get the first signs of alopecia, it is because the hair bulb becomes dormant. It is compared to a
seed lying in a hot desert, often for years, until sufficient rains come, then the seed germinates and grows.
Does hair grow?
The deepest portion of the hair
follicle is called the hair bulb. It is a cluster of dividing epidermal cells that surround a
ball of connective tissue, blood vessels and nerve fibres called the papilla. The hair papilla is
the ‘root’, or rather, the nerve centre of the follicle.
Hair growth is the result of the
cells in the hair bulb dividing from the bottom, pushing older cells towards the epidermis. These
cells appear to weld to each other. During the journey to the surface of the skin they
die. The dead cells turn into the protein keratin.
The portion of the hair shaft that can be seen projecting from the opening of the hair follicle is completely keratinised and therefore
lifeless.
Can Hair Be Pulled Out From The Roots?
Many times hair can be found on
the comb or in the sink. This is NOT the papilla or hair root, but merely an enlarged portion of
the hair shaft.
The Normal Conditions For Hair Growth
-
The sebaceous glands need to produce clean,
light sebum.
-
The male hormone testosterone, along with
other natural body products such as histamines all need to be in a balanced state.
-
There needs to be sufficient blood flow to
redice hairloss.
-
There needs to be an abundance of
polysaccharides present to help nourish cells and prevent hair loss.
