Being Involved In Accidents With Uninsured Drivers

There are things you can do.

Having accidents with uninsured drivers is one of the most worrying things that can happen when you are out driving and unfortunately is very common. The state of the world economy probably gives some people an excuse (in their tiny minds) not to spend out on car insurance and therefore risk driving uninsured. The facts are that uninsured drivers are ten times probably more likely to drink and drive and three times more likely to be convicted of driving without due care and attention. They also have a high incidence of drug use. Frighteningly one in twenty motorists drive without any car insurance at all on a regular basis. So you can see how as many as one in ten accidents involve uninsured drivers.

So what happens if you are unfortunate to be one of those who has accidents with uninsured drivers and it wasn't your fault? After the accident you will have no idea that they are uninsured so it is vital that in any accident you carry out the tasks that you should always do, assuming of course that you are in a fit state top do so and that is to:

  1. Take their name and address (it might not be real so you should ask for proof of identity) Take down the registration of the car In fact do this FIRST in any auto accident claims!
  2. Note what the other driver says, write it down as you may need the evidence later and a contemporary account is the best form of account for you to have in the future. If you have legal cover you can give a copy of this to your solicitor appointed by your car insurance firm.
  3. Take note of the accident scene including the time, the weather (Wet or dry, sun in eyes etc) Try and remember the direction of travel speed and so on.
  4. Note the damage to any vehicles involved. A camera or even a mobile phone camera is a great help in this circumstance. Get a picture of the driver as well if you can.
  5. Grab hold of any independent witness as well for their name address and telephone number. Once again do this at the start so they don't get chance to slope off!

OK so having that information will help any auto accident claims for accidents with uninsured drivers and if your car is under a comprehensive policy, you will be covered for uninsured insurance but you may lose your no claims bonus, unless you have paid for it to be protected a very wise decision as losing that is expensive. When it's not even your fault that is even worse! Any excess will have to be paid again unless your car insurance policy waives the fee if yours should be hit by an uninsured driver.

If you have third party insurance only you do have some problems, legal cover will help if they can trace the driver and in any event it should be reported to the police as a crime has been committed. in the UK there is a the Motor Insurers Bureau who will review a compensation claim, but you will still have an excess to pay. There are similar organizations in other countries a search on the Internet will find them. They will want all the information that you have collected above and a s much substantiation a s possible.

Everyone is trying to crack down on these selfish morons but once again the economic climate plays into their hands as the afflicted and think they are above the law and any responsibility towards their fellow human beings.

This is not a nice scenario, to be involved in but if you can prepare your self with good car insurance cover and legal aid, this will minimize the effect for you somewhat in any accidents with uninsured drivers.
